Namangan State University was established on February 28, 1992 according to the Decree N 356 of the President of the republic of Uzbekistan and registered by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education on the base of Namangan State Institute of Pedagogy. Namangan State Institute of Pedagogy was founded as a branch of Andijan Teacher Training Institute in 1942, was transferred into Namangan Teacher Training Institute in 1944, and in 1955 April 8 the institution became Namangan State Institute of Pedagogy according to the decision of the Cabinet Ministers of the USSR and decree N 112 of the Cabinet Ministers of Uzbekistan.

At first the institute consisted of three faculties: Uzbek language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Physics and Mathematics. Through the past period the institution has prepared more than 30 000 specialists for different fields of national economy. Nowadays more than 6090 students are enrolled in for bachelors degree, and 92 students for masters degree. To educate this huge number of students more then 461 professors and teachers have been employed out of which 195 specialists with various levels of scientific degrees. The University prepares specialists of 28 directions for bachelors, 8 directions for masters and 10 directions for postgraduate courses. Nowadays the University contains 8 faculties and 29 chairs.
